Free browser tool · Walk planning

Allow for the climb, not just the distance.

Estimate the arithmetic behind one walk: route distance at your entered flat-ground pace, one minute per 10 metres climbed, then the extra time you choose to add.

An estimate, not a finishing-time promise. This tool does not check your route, access, daylight, weather, terrain or ability. It is not live navigation or a safety assessment. Conditions and steep descents can add substantial time.

Your route assumptions

Use the full route distance and cumulative uphill ascent, not just the difference between the start and summit. No account: calculations run here without saving or uploading your inputs.

If the controls do not appear, the tool could not load. Use the worked example instead; do not send route details to support.

Walking-time estimate

Enter your assumptions and choose Estimate walking time. The result is not a recorded trip, an arrival time or a saved route.

Worked example, not a suggested walk

10 km at 4 km/h gives 150 minutes. Add 600 m of ascent: another 60 minutes. With 30 minutes of chosen extra time, the model totals 4 hours.

What is the formula?

Minutes = (distance in km ÷ pace in km/h × 60) + (ascent in m ÷ 10) + extra minutes

This is a Naismith-style estimate with an editable horizontal pace and a fixed ascent allowance of 600 m per hour. The ascent part does not change when you edit flat-ground pace. That simplification may not match how your group climbs. Imperial inputs use exactly 1 mile = 1.609344 km and 1 foot = 0.3048 m.

Mountaineering Scotland’s route-planning guidance explains distance timing, the ascent allowance and factors that change walking speed. Source checked 14 October 2026.

Why might another app give a different time?

Different methods and assumptions can produce different totals. OS Maps describes its Scarf-method estimate, which turns ascent into equivalent distance before applying activity speed. This tool uses the formula shown above; it is not a reproduction or accuracy benchmark of OS Maps or Skreppa.

What is missing from this estimate?

There is no automatic adjustment for surface, steep downhill sections, scrambling, navigation delays, river crossings, fitness, pack weight, group needs or weather. No route is checked for hazards or permission to use it. Your own extra-time entry is only an assumption, not proof of adequate contingency.

Use appropriate maps, current conditions and forecast information and a plan suited to the whole group. Carry a map and compass and know how to use them; a phone app should not be your only navigation. Read Mountain Rescue England and Wales’ preparation advice before heading out.

What happens to my inputs?

The tool does not upload figures, request GPS, read files, write browser storage or add inputs to a URL. Clear inputs removes the form figures and result from this page. Your browser may retain its own form or page state; printing creates a browser-managed copy. Hosting still receives ordinary page requests, and following an external link leaves this site.
